Find a country, city, region or place

Search the place index, jump to a region, or click the map to ask what is here.

What you get: The map centred on the place, with its profile open: country context for a country; population, coordinates and national indicators for a city.

Steps

  1. Open "SEARCH" in the menu bar (or Tools → "Find a place…", or press /).
  2. Type part of a name. Results are labelled COUNTRY, STATE / REGION or CITY with the country beneath, so the London in England and the London in Ontario are told apart.
  3. Choose a result. The map flies to it and the profile opens.
  4. With an empty search box, "Quick map extents" jump straight to a region.
  5. To ask about a spot rather than a named place, choose Tools → "Click mode: place" and click the map: it answers with the nested administrative areas, coordinates and, in the United States, census geographies. Right-click the map to switch between place and data click modes.

What success looks like

The profile panel names the place, its country and its type, and each figure carries its source and year.

Limits to know

  • The index is Natural Earth reference geography plus GeoNames cities: it finds places, not street addresses or businesses.
  • Country figures in a profile are the latest published by their source (the World Bank's year is shown beside each). They are annual statistics, not live readings.

If something is wrong

"Place search is temporarily unavailable."
The search service did not answer. Try again in a moment; the rest of the map keeps working.
My town is not found.
Try the nearest larger place or the region. Very small settlements may not be in the reference index.
