Your first useful map in two minutes

Open the map, find a place, choose what to see, check a source, and keep the view.

What you get: A map centred on a place you care about, showing layers that answer your question, with a link or saved view you can come back to.

Before you start

  • Nothing. The map works without an account. Signing in only matters when you want your work kept on your account as well as in this browser.

Steps

  1. Open cartevoir.com. The map is the first screen; nothing has to be dismissed first.
  2. Choose "Find a place" in the "Start with a place" panel, or press / (slash), or open "SEARCH" in the menu bar. Type a city, region or country and choose a result. "Try an example" opens London instead.
  3. Choose what to see: open the "Desks" menu and pick a desk — "Weather desk", "Global hazards desk" and the others each turn on a set of layers that work together. Or switch single layers in the "LAYERS" panel.
  4. Click something on the map, or read the place profile that opened on the right. Every item names its source and when it was observed or published.
  5. Keep the view: "Share…" in the File menu copies a link to this exact camera, layers and time, or "Saved views…" stores it by name in this browser.

What success looks like

The map shows your place; the place profile or an item's panel names its sources and dates; and a copied link reopens the same view in another tab.

Limits to know

  • Live contents change. A link reopens your camera, layers and time offset, but the data under them is whatever the feeds say when it is opened.
  • Some weather products cover the United States only (NWS alerts, SPC severe weather, the NEXRAD radar mosaic). Each layer's row in the "LAYERS" panel says where it reaches.

If something is wrong

The "Start with a place" panel is not showing.
It is offered once, to a new browser, and never over a shared link. Open it any time from Help → "Quick guide".
The map looks empty.
