as of 2026-09-07 · sources belowA Tuareg rebellion in northern Mali in January 2012 was overtaken by jihadist groups, and the conflict spread south and east across Burkina Faso and Niger. Two coalitions dominate: JNIM, aligned with al-Qaeda, and Islamic State Sahel Province. Military governments took power in all three states between 2020 and 2023, and by 2024 they had left ECOWAS and ended the French and United Nations deployments. Burkina Faso has the largest internally displaced population in the region.
